As you know anytime you increase the demand for more fuel, the factory fuel system needs some sort of modification to keep up with the demand, rather if its an addition of a lift pump and or fuel rail modifications. We have experienced a few trucks (some of our own) that have had that dreaded fuel rail pressure drop under throttle resulting in the P0087 Low Fuel Rail Pressure that can result in the truck going into Limp Mod. This can happen with stock applications all the way to modified vehicles. When you add a programmer, such as EFI Live Custom Tuning or a PPE hand held tuner, you run the risk of low fuel rail pressure under moderate to extreme throttle demand. By replacing the factory Fuel rail fitting, you can sometimes eliminate the low rail pressure drop. We have done two of our own trucks in the past month and no added fuel modifications that have experienced the low fuel rail pressure issue and codes.
The DMAX STORE crew experienced good results with the addition of this part, so we figured why not do a short review of this product.
PPE Claims that the PPE ported fuel rail fitting can reduce the chance of potential fuel rail drop.
Our two race trucks with no lift pump, just the stock fuel system would throw the trucks into limp mod under extreme throttle demand, causing the Low fuel rail problem.
In an attempt to eliminate the code without installing a lift pump, the DMAX Service Team installed the PPE ported rail fitting. Install is very simple and takes approximately 30-45 min with basic tools (We will be doing a DIY on this product in our DIY Section shortly). here is a picture below of the two fittings, PPE Ported on the left and the OEM Fitting on the right. As you can see, a drastic size difference of the hole that feeds the fuel rails!
stock fitting in place
Once the ported fitting was in and the trucks were running, under the same throttle demand, neither truck have experienced the low rail pressure code or problem. We are not saying this is the cure to all low fuel rail pressure issues, but it is an easy low cost alternative and works, well at least in our case.
I just installed this fitting on my 04.5 LLY with lift pump, not having a low rail pressure issue, but slightly dropping rail pressure under WOT Pulls. I have been monitoring the desired vs actual fuel rail pressure and will report the results back soon.
Ok, so the desired Rail pressure before the PPE fitting at WOT was 23k and mid way through the run I would drop to 21.3k and level there. This is with the lift pump, stock sticks, stock inj and Max Effort tune. So today after install of the PPE Fitting, my WOT Run, the Desired was 23k and the actual started there and fell off and stayed at 22.6k mod way through the WOT Run. Needless to say, I am getting max effort out of my max effort tune!!
So, as you can see the PPE Ported Fuel Rail Fitting is doing what it claims to do!! If you think about it, getting the fuel from the tank, to the OEM Filter and head, then through the lines to the fuel rail is no issue with the lift pump as it is supplying all the fuel PSI and volume I need to the fuel rail, but you still have to fit the fuel through that tiny restrictive fuel rail fitting, and once through it the fuel still feeds the rails and under WOT the fuel in the rails feed the injectors and as you know with high demand from the tuning for fuel, the rail still gets drained, even with a lift pump. The increased sized port on the PPE fuel rail fitting definitely increases the volume and pressure in the fuel rail, thus supplying more fuel in the rail over a longer period of time under WOT giving the injectors the fuel needed under the actual demand and then recovers quicker once the WOT is over. A believer in this Fitting for sure!
We feel the PPE Ported fuel rail fitting will increase fuel flow volume from the fuel pump to the fuel rail by replacing the stock fitting which is restrictive, reducing the chance for potential pressure drop, increasing fuel recovery time under extreme throttle conditions and when running performance tuners or other modification that increase fuel demand give your fuel rail the volume of fuel it needs to not throw the Low Fuel Rail Pressure issue.
The DMAX STORE gives this product a 10-10 for its easy install, low cost and end result!
